The U.S. Army is taking a massive leap forward in its ability to detect and destroy incoming aerial threats. In a major defense procurement announcement, the Department of War has officially awarded a multi-billion dollar agreement to rapidly produce the military’s most advanced tactical radar system. The newly announced Lockheed Martin $3B Army Sentinel A4 radar contract represents a critical investment in protecting ground forces from an increasingly complex array of airborne dangers.
Upgrading the Shield
According to the official contract notice, the massive fixed-price-incentive and cost-plus-fixed-fee award carries a total potential value of nearly $3 billion. Under this comprehensive agreement, Lockheed Martin is directly tasked with the full-scale production and associated engineering services for the Sentinel A4 radar system.
The Sentinel A4 is designed as a high-performance, next-generation air defense radar that will completely replace the Army’s legacy Sentinel A3 platforms. The new X-band digital active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar boasts a massive leap in capability, extending detection ranges by up to 175 percent and improving overall sensitivity by an astounding 225 percent compared to its predecessor. This allows the system to effortlessly track and identify a wide spectrum of threats, including cruise missiles, hostile drones, rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, as well as incoming rockets, artillery, and mortars (RAM).
Open Architecture and Future Growth
A critical feature of the Sentinel A4 is its highly adaptable open architecture design. Recognizing that the threat landscape is constantly evolving, Lockheed Martin engineered the system to allow for rapid, software-defined capability upgrades without requiring physical hardware modifications. In fact, the radar includes a 60 percent growth capacity, ensuring it can be easily updated to counter future enemy innovations.
Furthermore, the system is built to seamlessly integrate with the Army’s most advanced command and control networks, including the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) and the Forward Area Air Defense Command and Control (FAADC2) systems. This interconnectivity ensures that the radar can instantly feed fire-control quality data to interceptors, drastically reducing engagement timelines.
Rapid Deployment and Production
The Lockheed Martin $3B Army Sentinel A4 radar contract guarantees that these critical defense systems will reach the front lines at scale. Following a successful development phase—where the first low-rate initial production unit was delivered in February 2026—the new $3 billion agreement secures production and support through June 2031.
Designed for ultimate mobility, the Sentinel A4 can be emplaced in under 30 minutes and transported by C-5 or C-17 aircraft, rail, or sea. By aggressively funding the mass production of these highly advanced sensors, the Pentagon is ensuring that American soldiers and critical homeland assets remain fiercely protected by the most capable short-to-medium range air defense radar in the world.
