In a monumental technology acquisition announcement, the Department of War confirmed that an aerospace giant has officially secured a highly lucrative agreement to extend the operational life of a vital orbital network. The newly awarded Boeing $2B Air Force contract guarantees the long-term continuation of secure, narrowband communications for joint forces operating globally.
Advancing the MUOS Constellation
Awarded by Space Systems Command following a highly competitive acquisition process, the fixed-price-incentive contract specifically supports the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS). Boeing will serve as the prime contractor for the highly anticipated MUOS SLE Phase II (Service Life Extension) program, successfully beating out a competing offer to secure the full maximum value of $2 billion.
Under the comprehensive scope of work, Boeing is directly responsible for the design, development, and advanced manufacturing of two cutting-edge MUOS replenishment satellites. Furthermore, the contract encompasses vital launch support operations and rigorous on-orbit testing to ensure the platforms seamlessly integrate with the existing ground infrastructure and legacy terminals. Work on the massive project will be primarily executed at Boeing’s advanced facilities in El Segundo, California, with a projected completion date of September 30, 2035.
Extending a Strategic Advantage
The Mobile User Objective System is an absolutely critical asset for the Department of Defense. Operating as the military’s premier narrowband satellite communications system, the MUOS constellation provides frontline warfighters with secure, ultra-high frequency (UHF) voice and data links. Utilizing an advanced Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) cellular architecture, the network enables highly resilient communications for mobile troops in remote and heavily contested environments worldwide.
The award of the MUOS SLE Phase II contract follows early risk-reduction efforts initiated by the Air Force. In January 2024, the service awarded initial Phase I contracts to both Boeing and Lockheed Martin to minimize technical risks ahead of the final production phase. By officially selecting Boeing to execute Phase II, the military ensures that this crucial network will remain fully operational and technologically dominant well into the mid-2030s.
Bolstering Defense Space Operations
To immediately kickstart this multi-year development effort, the government obligated over $204 million in fiscal year 2026 research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) funds at the time of the award.
