Prudential plc (NYSE: PUK) has reported additional share repurchases under its ongoing buyback programme, purchasing a total of 1,886,615 ordinary shares between August 17 and August 21, 2026. The transactions were carried out through JP Morgan Securities plc on the London Stock Exchange.
The latest purchases form part of a programme launched on January 6, 2026, under authority granted by shareholders at Prudential’s 2025 Annual General Meeting.
Purchase Prices
Prudential bought shares at volume-weighted average prices ranging from £10.1033 to £10.4278 during the five-day period.
On August 17, the company purchased 372,457 shares at a volume-weighted average price of £10.4278. Purchases continued throughout the week, reaching 384,248 shares on August 20 at an average price of £10.1033. On August 21, Prudential bought another 371,404 shares at £10.2583 per share.
The transactions were executed as on-exchange purchases and were subject to the applicable London Stock Exchange Listing Rules and Hong Kong share buyback requirements.
Shares to Be Cancelled
Prudential said it intends to cancel all of the shares repurchased in the latest transactions. Following the cancellations, the company will have 2,497,088,116 shares in issue, with the same number of total voting rights.
Cancelling repurchased shares permanently removes them from the company’s share count. This can reduce the number of shares over which earnings and other financial measures are distributed and can increase the proportional ownership of remaining shareholders.
Buyback Reaches 56.86 Million Shares
The latest transactions bring Prudential’s total share purchases under the 2026 buyback programme to 56,858,853 ordinary shares. The cumulative volume-weighted average purchase price stands at 1,085.2089 pence, or approximately £10.8521, per share.
The continued repurchases demonstrate that Prudential is actively deploying capital through its share buyback programme. For investors, the reduction in shares outstanding may be an important factor when assessing the company’s capital-return strategy and future per-share metrics.
Investor Takeaway
Prudential’s latest filing highlights continued progress in its 2026 buyback programme, with nearly 1.89 million additional shares repurchased in one week. With more than 56.8 million shares bought since January, the programme represents a significant ongoing capital-return initiative.
The company plans to cancel the repurchased shares, reducing its outstanding share count further. Investors may therefore continue watching the pace of future repurchases, cancellation activity and Prudential’s broader capital-allocation strategy.
