The U.S. Army is taking significant steps to neutralize the rapidly growing threat of enemy unmanned aerial systems. In a major defense procurement announcement, the Department of War has officially awarded a multi-million dollar agreement to secure cutting-edge defenses against aerial attacks. The newly announced AeroVironment Army counter-drone contract represents a potential $500 million investment designed to rapidly field commercial technologies capable of detecting and defeating hostile drones on the modern battlefield.
Securing Commercial C-UAS Technologies
According to the official firm-fixed-price contract notice, the massive agreement tasks AeroVironment with delivering advanced commercial counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS). With work locations and funding to be determined with each individual order, the contract is scheduled to run through June 29, 2029, under the management of the Army Contracting Command at the Detroit Arsenal in Michigan.
This aggressive procurement strategy reflects the Army’s urgent need to defend against a wide spectrum of unmanned threats, particularly small drones that have proven highly effective and dangerously affordable in recent global conflicts. By tapping directly into the commercial sector, the military aims to bypass traditional, sluggish acquisition cycles and immediately equip forward-deployed forces with the kinetic and non-kinetic tools required to protect critical installations and personnel.
Expanding the Halo_Shield Ecosystem
The massive $500 million award significantly expands AeroVironment’s already dominant footprint within the counter-drone market. Earlier in April, the Simi Valley-based defense contractor officially unveiled Halo_Shield, a highly modular C-UAS platform designed to serve as a comprehensive defense network.
The advanced system seamlessly combines high-fidelity sensors, various effectors, and robust command-and-control capabilities to detect, track, identify, and defeat a wide array of threats—from individual small drones and complex swarms to subsonic cruise missiles. Because the platform is explicitly designed to integrate with existing defense networks, the Army can rapidly plug these commercial capabilities into its broader air defense architecture.
A Legacy of Kinetic and Laser Defense
The latest award builds on a long history of successful counter-UAS collaboration between AeroVironment and the U.S. Army. Throughout 2025, the company delivered prototype laser weapon systems under the Army’s Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser program. Additionally, AeroVironment secured a separate contract to scale the production of its Freedom Eagle kinetic interceptor, a specialized missile designed to physically defeat Group 2 and Group 3 unmanned aircraft.
As near-peer adversaries and non-state actors continue to weaponize commercial drone technology, this half-billion-dollar investment guarantees that American soldiers remain protected by the most versatile and rapidly deployable counter-drone capabilities available on the market.
