Genie Energy delivered a stronger bottom-line performance in the second quarter of 2026 despite reporting lower revenue. The retail energy provider posted quarterly revenue of $100.4 million, down from $105.3 million in the same period last year. However, the company significantly improved profitability as higher retail energy margins offset the impact of lower customer usage and sales volumes.
Gross profit increased sharply to $33.7 million, compared with $23.5 million a year earlier, while consolidated gross margin expanded to 33.5% from 22.3%, reflecting more favorable wholesale energy market conditions and improved pricing dynamics.
Earnings More Than Quadruple
The company’s profitability improved across key metrics during the quarter. Income from operations climbed to $6.5 million, nearly tripling from $2.3 million in the prior-year period.
Net income attributable to common shareholders surged to $11.4 million, up from $2.3 million last year. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) increased to $0.43, compared with $0.09 in the second quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, Adjusted EBITDA more than doubled to $7.5 million, compared with $3.0 million a year ago.
Retail Energy Business Drives Results
Genie Energy’s improved earnings were primarily driven by its retail energy operations, which benefited from healthier gross margins despite reduced customer consumption and continued investment in customer acquisition. The company noted that more normalized wholesale energy costs created a more favorable operating environment than the volatile market conditions experienced in previous periods.
The strong margin performance helped offset the modest decline in revenue, demonstrating the company’s ability to generate higher profitability even amid softer sales.
Renewables Continue to Contribute
Genie Renewables remained part of the company’s diversified business portfolio, supporting long-term growth through solar development and renewable energy projects. While retail energy remained the largest contributor to earnings, the renewables segment continues to expand Genie Energy’s presence in the clean energy market.
Outlook
The second-quarter results highlight Genie Energy’s focus on disciplined pricing, operational efficiency, and margin expansion. Despite lower revenue, the company generated substantially higher earnings and cash profitability, indicating resilience in a competitive retail energy market.
With normalized wholesale energy conditions and continued investment in customer growth, Genie Energy appears well positioned to balance profitability with long-term expansion across both its retail energy and renewable energy businesses. The company also maintained its full-year outlook following the stronger-than-expected quarterly performance.
