As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms modern military strategy and mission operations, Google is aggressively moving to bridge the gap between commercial research and national security. In a significant executive appointment, the technology giant has officially named Amina Al Sherif as its Field Chief Technology Officer for AI and Defense. The move, announced via Al Sherif’s LinkedIn profile, underscores a concerted push by the company to deploy advanced AI capabilities into complex defense environments.
Bridging DeepMind and Public Sector
In her new capacity, Al Sherif will serve as a foundational operational bridge between Google DeepMind and Google Public Sector. Working directly alongside fellow Field CTOs Christopher Hein and Charles Elliott, she will focus on channeling leading-edge generative AI, machine learning, and advanced research toward national security applications.
Al Sherif emphasized that her primary focus is to ensure emerging technologies are transitioned safely, effectively, and responsibly into the hands of organizations tasked with global security.
“I do not take this position lightly. Like I have for fifteen years, I continue to take security, for all of its nuance and all of its weight, forward as technology’s fate is inevitably intertwined with that of national security and policy,” Al Sherif noted regarding her new role.
A Deep Defense and Startup Pedigree
Al Sherif brings an extensive blend of technical specialization, startup leadership, and operational military experience to the position. For one, she most recently served as the Generative AI Lead at Google Public Sector, where she spearheaded efforts to transition government customers away from traditional deterministic AI architectures toward scalable generative models. Prior to that, she led AI/ML practices across state, local, and federal government portfolios.
Moreover, before rejoining Google in 2022, Al Sherif held multiple executive roles at machine learning startup Anno.Ai, including Chief Innovation Officer, Chief Product Officer, and Chief Data Ethics Officer. She also previously served as President of The Data Ethics Consortium for Security.
She has also spent over twelve years in the Department of Defense, serving as an Army Officer in the Reserves and North Carolina National Guard as a tactical cyber operator and targeter. Her operational background includes deploying under Operation Inherent Resolve to Iraq, as well as missions supporting Special Operations Forces in Afghanistan, Syria, Turkey, and Israel.

Al Sherif’s elevation to Field CTO comes as the Department of War accelerates its demand for interoperable, zero-trust AI architectures capable of operating from cloud data centers to the tactical edge. She is scheduled to join major defense and industry leaders as a featured voice at the upcoming Potomac Officers Club’s 2026 Navy Summit on August 27, where discussions will center on how emerging AI breakthroughs are directly reshaping maritime superiority and national security.
