In what could become one of the largest corporate financial arrangements in history, Nvidia is reportedly in advanced negotiations to provide a staggering Nvidia OpenAI 250B guarantee Ohio data center commitment. This monumental financial backing would enable the ChatGPT developer to secure leasing rights for a massive, 10-gigawatt AI super campus currently under development.
The 10-Gigawatt Super Campus and Government Power
The proposed data center complex is being developed in southern Ohio by SB Energy, a subsidiary of Japan’s SoftBank Group. The overall project, which includes the advanced AI chips required to power the facilities, could ultimately exceed $500 billion in total costs. The site itself carries deep historical significance, as it is being constructed atop a former Cold War-era uranium enrichment plant.
Because of the massive energy requirements, access to the site’s power is highly regulated. Power allocation for this federally owned Ohio data center project is controlled directly by the U.S. government. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is reportedly playing a key role in determining which AI companies will gain access to the grid. Additionally, the project is being heavily supported by foreign capital, drawing on separate financing from Japan established under a recent bilateral trade agreement. While OpenAI is currently considered the leading contender for the lease, tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic have also reportedly engaged in discussions regarding access.
Shifting from Equity to Ecosystem Lock-In
Nvidia’s reported $250 billion guarantee marks a strategic pivot for the chipmaker. Rather than offering a direct equity injection( which rumors previously suggested Nvidia was scaling back) the company is shifting to a “financing guarantee plus ecosystem lock-in” model.
Because OpenAI remains an unprofitable private entity without an investment-grade credit rating, securing the capital required for this scale of infrastructure would typically carry exorbitant borrowing costs. Nvidia’s financial backing serves as a massive credit enhancement, allowing SoftBank and OpenAI to secure necessary financing at significantly lower rates.
